5 Things to Talk About in Therapy

Disclosure: I share snippets of my stories to help anyone who can relate or knows someone who would benefit from reading them. These are stories that have molded me into who I am today and ask for respectful comments and positive vibes only. Thank you

One of the most popular questions I get from people who want to start therapy but don’t know how is, “What do I even talk about?”. This is also the same question I asked myself many times before I got comfortable with therapy being part of my regular practice. Although I had gone through therapy  as a child and then in my teenage years, it felt very different choosing therapy as an adult and being well aware of some of my traumas that were creeping up. In a way it felt new, a bit scary and even uncomfortable at first.

When I had my first session as an adult, I wasn’t even sure what to say or how to  approach it. I remember asking my therapist, “how is this supposed to work?”, “what can I/cannot say?” and something along the lines of “would it be ok for me to just vent to you?”. After a few sessions it became a bit more normal and I actually look forward to having that dedicated space to talk about anything I want.

Therapy is definitely something that needs to be molded to your individual & personal needs. There is no specific way you are required to approach it nor are there specific topics you need to discuss but I’d like to share a few that have helped me in the last few years. Hopefully these can spark some inspo if you need that little boost to get started or if you are already on therapy, maybe these can help your current sessions:

5 Things to talk about in Therapy

  1. A specific trauma in your life
    1. Car accident
    2. Toxic relationship
    3. Financial instability
  2. Current stressors at work
    1. Lack of work life balance
    2. Toxic manager
    3. Unstable environment
  3. Current stressors in your life
    1. Your emotions
    2. Family pressures
    3. Relationship struggles
  4. How to manage anxiety
    1. Coping mechanisms
    2. Why are you being triggered
    3. What does anxiety mean for you
  5. ANYTHING
    1. Your dreams
    2. Something you are proud of
    3. Your thoughts

Closing Notes

These ideas I’m sharing are simply suggestions to help make therapy a bit easier to approach. We live in a world where mental health has become a huge topic but we have barely scraped the tip of the iceberg when it comes to having easy access to the support we need for our mental well being let alone the comfort of knowing how to use this resource when it is accessible. I know that with time and enough amplification, it’s only a matter of time before we can begin treating our mental health needs just like our “regular health”. I hope this blog post contributes to demystifying one small part of therapy even if it’s simply by providing some visibility into the topics I’ve personally used it for.

21 Yoga Benefits

Disclosure: I share snippets of my stories to help anyone who can relate or knows someone who would benefit from reading them. These are stories that have molded me into who I am today and ask for respectful comments and positive vibes only. Thank you

My Yoga Background

In the thick of chaos, sadness, happiness, and every emotion that comes to mind, practicing Yoga keeps me grounded. It helps me create the balance I need when external life factors are most heightened.

There are so many facts backed up by science that explain the benefits of Yoga, but what I’ll be sharing is my personal experience practicing yoga and the ways I have seen it benefit my life. Some of these may naturally align with those facts while others will be new or maybe

For more context, I began practicing yoga on and off over 6 years ago but in the past 9months, I’ve rooted this as a staple to my morning routine. This means that I practice yoga about 5 days per week pretty regularly each month.

Motivation to Practice Yoga

In the morning when all I wish to do is snooze, I simply think about the feeling Yoga brings to me while I’m practicing but also that fulfilling feeling after completing a session and this usually gets me out of bed. During my session, I usually catch myself so incredibly focused that I forget about the real world. This helps me stay present and reduces any worries I have for the future. When I finish my yoga practice, I spend a few minutes setting my intention for the day, I pray and I vocalize what I’m most grateful for. Once I’m done with this 15-30min routine, I feel so much more level headed, balanced, calm and prepared to begin my day. It is such a refreshing feeling to be in control of how I choose to approach my day.

Closing

These are simply the 21 benefits I tracked throughout my yoga sessions in April along with some of the classes I took. It was such a fun experience digging deeper into my WHY for practicing Yoga. I know this is not the answer to everyone’s needs but I hope this snippet of my favorite morning routine encourages you to find what works for YOU. Who knows, maybe it’s something you’ve already been doing all of your life but all you need to do is make it a more consistent part of your life. Whatever it is, I hope you find it or I encourage you to use my curated list of classes to explore the yogi that may be in you.

Women’s Health

Fertility… I haven’t openly shared much about my fertility journey until now but I hope to use my blog as a platform to be more vulnerable about this topic. I will however draw boundaries where necessary to protect me and my family. This also means that I’ll be respecting my husband’s story and only sharing my experience on this topic from a  woman’s perspective.  To share in a few words, it’s been a sensitive topic for me but I’ve learned a great deal about the different health options available to us as women. Prior to this, I only knew about western medicine and nothing much beyond what my health insurance provided but after experiencing some fertility challenges, I took it upon myself to explore holistic health a bit more. I’ll be sharing more about my personal and unique  journey but please know that these will not be answers to your personal problems. I simply hope to open up another door and empower you to take control of your health especially in a country that makes it so complicated and in many ways a privilege rather than a common necessity. I also aim to be very genuine about the emotional toll it can take on you especially if having kids is something you desire with every ounce inside of you. What I have come to accept is that this journey is incredibly unique to every single person (female or male) but in the end, you will grow your little family even if that means it looks a little different from someone else.

Fitness & Nutrition

Fitness and eating healthy has been part of my life since I was a little girl. This doesn’t mean  I eat super clean 100% of the time or that I’ve dedicated my life to fitness. What I mean, is that I’ve naturally gravitated towards a healthier and active lifestyle since I was a kid. Whenever I would get upset at my parents or family, I would go on runs around the neighborhood or lock myself in my room and release my emotions through little work outs I remembered from PE class. When I tried new foods, I genuinely seemed to enjoy the simpler cleaner meals that weren’t very accessible in my home or school. Throughout college, when I became more aware that I truly enjoyed fitness and nutrition, I pushed myself  to stay active and to eat healthy but honestly, I struggled. My work and school consumed my time around the clock so I found myself constantly sacrificing this part of my joy. However, as soon as I graduated from graduate school (3 years ago), I made sure these two things would become a more integrated part of my lifestyle. I’ve learned that our fitness and nutrition journey has to change at every chapter of our lives. I don’t expect that the same workouts I’m doing now will work when I have a baby (postpartum) nor do I expect to be eating the exact same food I’m eating now when I turn 50 (because I aim to evolve my knowledge on these categories by then). We have to think about these components of our life as a “Lifestyle” not a diet or aggressive workout burden just to build abs. If getting abs or simply losing weight is your only goal, you may find yourself right back where you started. Try thinking of these as constants in your life. Just like you wouldn’t survive a day without breathing, I encourage you to find space where fitness and nutrition become a simple necessity in your life.

Mental Health

Mental health is incredibly near and dear to my heart. I’ve openly shared about my near death experience from overdosing and my depression diagnosis when I was just a teenager. It still hits me hard when I look back at that version of myself but I choose to be vulnerable and share these experiences with others in order to shed the light we all need during the dark moments. There were so many people who supported me and uplifted me during such a dark time so it comes from such a genuine place when I choose to pay it forward. Healing requires doing the internal hard work that scares you before you begin to scare it away. This work starts with the desire to open up instead of bottling it up inside. It means choosing to cry when that’s what you need. It means investing in therapy or therapeutic outlets that will allow you to heal while having the right support system to reroute you if you go off track. Mental health is a topic I will keep talking about until it’s taken as seriously as our physical health. We have a long way to go but the more of us who choose to pave the way, the faster we will create the impact we need in this world.

BE Healthy

Being healthy comes in many different forms. For some people, being healthy means

  • Eating organic
  • Exercising everyday
  • Taking Vitamins
  • Eliminating most processed foods
  • Being vegan/pescatarian/vegetarian
  • Being cautious about ingredients

And the list goes on and on… But for me, being healthy is a holistic concept. I believe our health encompasses our physical, mental and overall well being. They are all interconnected and although one of these may need more attention from us at certain stages of our lives, we cannot leave the other areas unwatered without feeling the negative impacts. Health is an area I’ve spent alot of work on in the last few years so I’m eager to share the small and big changes I’ve made to achieve more balance when focusing on my overall health and well being.

About Me

About Me

Hi, my name is Rebecca (or for most, Becky)! I started this blog to share snippets of my life in order to continue inspiring people (mostly women) around me. A few years ago I began to open up on social media about my personal adversities, successes and overall approach to life. Sharing my raw stories made me feel nervous at first but then I realized how much they were truly helping and inspiring those around me. This motivated me to follow my dreams and start something that I should've started a long time ago. I've always found a genuine joy in writing and in helping others so I'm incredibly happy to continue sharing snippets of my life in a whole new way.

Xoxo, Becky
